ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the ideological foundations of Western interventions. It deals with the question of defining success or failure of contemporary interventions. The book provides to legal aspects of the interventions, in particular the impact of operations on the stability and recognition of normative order in the field of the use of force in international relations. It draws on important and topical questions of the economic aspects of Western interventionism. The book discusses the central question of the whole volume – the ‘utility’ of Western interventions, the value of their results, as well as the costs and consequences both for the intervening parties and the countries or regions subject to intervention, and for the international community as a whole. It discusses the importance of the state and the region where the operation is carried out from the perspective of Western states.
