ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to show the values we assign to gifts and the kind of society behind our choices of what to give. A present may participate in the gift economy, the commodity economy, or the space where they overlap and coexist, as it is a symbol of the complexity of the society and the gradual changes the society is undergoing. To address this general topic, I will focus on the changes in Christmas presents in Chile from the late nineteenth century to approximately 1950.
