ABSTRACT

Training is moving online. From fire safety to DIY computer-building, from salsa moves to film-making, core skills are being compartmentalized, digitized and disseminated in a host of online environments. The numbers associated with this trend are staggering and rising exponentially, along with the platforms designed to deliver such training (though YouTube remains the standout source for non-specialists looking for quick fixes). 1 Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs – short, free-to-access units of learning delivered entirely online – are a more specialist subset of the YouTube training phenomenon and appear on popular platforms such as Coursera, EDx and FutureLearn providing organized ‘learning journeys’ for learners all over the world. 2
