ABSTRACT

How is it possible that humans find it morally disturbing and at times outrageous to harm animals, yet also participate comfortably in a society where harming, exploiting, and killing animals is part of the daily routine? Why do we love and exploit animals? The present book addresses this question from different angles and disciplines, synthesizing scientific perspectives with the insights garnered from those on the front lines of animal advocacy. In this introduction we first lay out the central theme of the book and highlight the key objectives. We then present an overview of all contributions to this book.
