ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a selection of entries across the seventeen goals in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) data base downloaded in January 2017. It proposes cutting down the number of small island developing states (SIDS) from the 51 in the UN book to just 28 excluding those that are not sovereign states, not small islands and not developing. The chapter explores flaws and weaknesses in the proposed UN system of sustainable development goals, targets and indicators. It suggests a short list of seven elements that can link the model of building nurtured resilience to the inherent economic and environmental vulnerabilities of SIDS, within a framework of technical evidence based interventions. Overall for some, especially the micro SIDS, the official commitment to the SDG system may seem more of a curse than a cure to their development challenges.
