ABSTRACT

This chapter includes cyclone as a variable besides the conventional variables, which are employed in the tourism-led growth studies. It reviews trends in tourism besides presenting a brief literature survey of tourism and growth. The chapter describes the trend in Fiji's tourism sector. It discusses the past annual occurrences of cyclones with estimates of damages and other details. The chapter outlines the modelling and methodology procedures and presents results. The emergence of Nadi, the country's premier international airport is now the Pacific hub for making connections to Solomon Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu by all international business travellers. M. Bonte and S. Cook report that countries experiencing damages from natural disasters are in the Pacific region. The annual data series of tourist arrivals are reported for Fiji for the first time since January 2016 by International Monetary Fund as part of International Financial Statistics in the form of index, in addition to being reported by United Nations World Tourism Organization.
