ABSTRACT

The best solution to humanity’s problems of climate change, world poverty and the probability of nuclear war are a reformed United Nations (UN) for international peace and a sustainable environment based on the principles of federal democracy. It could be realized through initiatives of the United States of America (USA), because it is a federal democracy and the most economically and militarily powerful state in the world. To this end, it is proposed that the American government (1) replace its present neoliberal capitalist system with a democratic form to achieve less economic inequality and a slower rate of economic growth, (2) negotiate with the Russian and Chinese governments for similar changes to their economic systems, and (3) negotiate for a downsizing of military resources and operations in all three states, and the placement of the remainder under a reformed UN peacekeeping body. These proposals may not be utopian, because the USA appears to be on the verge of a political revolution that could lead to a Presidency and Congress that would legislate and manage a more democratic economy and pursue a foreign policy supportive of a reformed UN.
