ABSTRACT

A paradigm shift is required to transform our current food system to one that has health and environmental sustainability as both policy drivers and outcomes. Powerful commercial interests oppose many actions needed. The complex and contested nature of the challenges being confronted requires advocacy at all levels to initiate and maintain shifts across the system. Advocacy is increasingly seen as a core professional competency for public health practitioners. It aims to mobilise resources; change opinions; catalyse change; and ultimately cause action for public health good. A planned process is recommended, focusing on: an evidence-based understanding of the issue and why it matters (the why); the context in which it is occurring, the specific message and agenda (the what); the advocacy targets, including government and citizens (the who); and, the approach (the how). Coalitions of diverse and politically astute actors are needed to advocate for timely, relevant action to create a healthy and stainable food system.
