ABSTRACT

Professor Pinhas Yoeli can be seen today as one of the mentors of computer-assisted cartography of the early 1980s. Besides his abundance of published papers in manifold international cartographic journals he set a cartographic benchmark in 1982 with his book, 'Cartographic Drawing with Computers', the first of its kind, published by the University of Nottingham. Based on the principles of Eduard Imhof, Yoeli hit the spot with his Henry Johns award-winning article 'Topographic Relief Depiction by Hachures with Computer and Plotter' that describes the revision of a method introduced centuries ago by J. G. Lehmann. The use of hachures is extended to not only depict topographic relief but also to be utilized as a source for the computer-assisted treatment of morphometric topics. Topographic relief depiction has always played an important role in topographic mapping, particularly in mountainous regions.
