ABSTRACT

The research potential of the full range of documentary sources for the castle is discussed by Katharine Keats-Rohan and that of the town's important and early borough court rolls by Christopher Dyer. In the case of the coin finds, it seems unlikely that would have wholly fabricated the 'thousands', since some of the must have been displayed, sold or passed on; but whether they properly came from the town and immediate hinterland again cannot be proven. The Wallingford Burh to Borough Research Project developed a multi-phase scheme of archaeological and historical investigation that integrated the several methods. The principal strategy of the fieldwork arm of the Burh to Borough Research Project was to undertake detailed surface and sub-surface survey mapping in the Easter field seasons in order to generate both plots and related questions emerging from their interpretation and then to guide the placement of excavation trenches.
