ABSTRACT

Shapwick and its neighbouring parishes had produced a notable series of coin finds, all Roman in date. All were chance finds and many comprised hoards. Coins found by the Shapwick Project are, with the possible exception of nine coins from Field 4016, single finds which contrasts with the earlier discoveries in which hoards predominate. The retrieval rate of small metal objects, coins in particular, during fieldwalking and to a lesser extent excavation is inevitably going to be relatively low. Use of metal detectors markedly improves the level of retrieval although it has to be recognised that the majority of metalwork found in this manner. The illustrated catalogue has been compiled by grouping all the Shapwick metalwork together, the overview summarising the best of the finds within their functional categories, within a chronological framework where it has been possible to assign dates to specific items.
