ABSTRACT

The main changes which occurred in phase 3 were the further enlargement of the Great Hall (Building 17) and the demolition of the lesser hall (Building 12). The lesser hall had probably accommodated the famuli, the full-time workers on the demesne. The other major additions to the site in phase 3 were the postern gate, the site boundary wall, presumably replacing an existing hedge or fence, and the wall enclosing the chapel garth, more sharply dividing the domestic buildings from the agricultural range. The phase-3 wall may represent a desire for a more secure enclosure giving additional protection against theft and other intrusions. A few finds from the 18th century, notably a knife and fork and post-suppression coins, show that the site was visited, probably by stone robbers, after its abandonment, but there is no evidence of any continuity of occupation later than 1313-38.
