      ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to examine the changing nature of coming out for female athletes engaged in competitive, organised, team sports. Using Griffin’s (1998) climates of homophobia, it is possible to show the changing environments within team sports in a culture of declining homophobia. Additionally, the diminishing need for athletic capital is examined, using research from men’s and women’s sport in recreational settings. Finally, the need for athletes to make a statement when coming out has declined, in line with a decrease in cultural homophobia. The changing nature of women’s sexual fluidity, and the lesbian label becoming negated, has led to a sporting environment that can be described as open and inclusive.
