ABSTRACT

The chapter aims to build a hypothesis of gender mainstreaming in urban planning and design in Greece, and thus to contribute to Greek and European debates. It reviews critical, direct, and indirect, attempts of gender-awareness activities in recent years. Specifics of the statutory regimes and the actual practices in Greek cities are set out, in order to advance a context-specific framework of focused action. Finally, it is argued that the issues at stake are not only contextually institutional and knowledge-based, but depend on the creative mobilization of all agents involved so as to formulate an updated conceptualization of inclusive urban environments.
