ABSTRACT

The 125th anniversary of the vote for most women in Aotearoa New Zealand, albeit not all women, was marked in July 2018 by an important exhibition in the Auckland War Memorial Museum on women’s equality entitled ‘Are we there yet?’ Whilst Aotearoa New Zealand may be known by and large as a socially progressive country, there are many areas in which progress still needs to be made and one of these is the planning and design of our cities and towns. The five contributors to this chapter are from local-body politics, women’s activism, consultancy, community development and the academy. The chapter sets out to show how far Aotearoa has come and how far we still have to go. The key conclusion is that Aotearoa New Zealand is at a potential tipping point when it comes to gendering cities. Women’s activism, the work of mana wāhine, politics, research, education and practice are highlighting the importance of gender perspectives.
