ABSTRACT

Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs) of urban development plans are useful tools for integrating aspects of gender in urban plans. GIAs are a main tool proposed by the First Quadrennial Report for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda, published in 2018. They have also been introduced in European Union directives and in some European national legislation, as well as applied in practice at several urban development plans of various scales. One such application is at Madrid Nuevo Norte, an extensive regeneration project in the north of the city involving over 10,000 housing units, a new central business district, and many new facilities and elements of infrastructure. Based on the practical experience of working in the design of Madrid Nuevo Norte and in drafting its GIA, this chapter discusses the possibilities and conditions for the effective application of this planning tool.
