ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the concept to explore the implementation, as green infrastructure should be context-dependent and adaptable to different settings. One of the primary principles of green infrastructure (GI) planning is to reconnect communities in urban regions to natural environments. A key advantage of the GI approach to adaptation is that it is already becoming an accepted practice. This chapter explores the green infrastructure transect as a framework to utilize GI as an adaptation policy and to mainstream adaptation into current planning practices. The GI transect is a conceptual tool that integrates GI measures across varying urban contexts and across planning scales. It builds on transect concepts from ecology, landscape planning, and urban planning. Adaptation policies run the risk of a piecemeal, systematized approach. The chapter concludes with GI an effective adaptation policy when it is matched to the physical character of urban environments and the needs of communities they are intended to serve.
