ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the guidelines related to observing and evaluating teachers, providing guidance and support, and assisting in establishing a clear framework for evaluating staff. In order to appropriately evaluate special education staff, one of the most important things is to make sure the staff member understands his or her role and the various responsibilities associated with that role. Even though there are many different types of special education classrooms, there are standards for performance that can reasonably be expected for all teachers. Every teacher deserves to have a formal evaluation from either a special education or building level administrator every year. Similar to the Instructional Priorities listed above, meet with the teacher, related services staff, or aide prior to the observation. As a part of the actual formal observation of the teacher, it is much better to have multiple data points so as to be able to provide comparison points.
