ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes a pattern through which a male patient lives a dream of primitive, omnipotent phallic supremacy; the possession of a penis invested with the power of total masterly provision, with the contribution of the woman nullified. She shows how some of the issues operate in the transference and considers some factors that modify or exacerbate this constellation. She describes that the movement from this tyrannical organisation to a more realistic interchange is dependent on working through the anxieties and propensities that drive sexual development into the constellation. She suggests that this patient's desire to be the omnipotent provider carried with it the denial of other sources of provision; unconsciously, his wish to be this master penis went together with his worship of an omnipotent phallus, either in a type of homosexual phantasy, or in heterosexual disguise, through attachments to 'phallic' women.
