ABSTRACT

A transnational vision for writing education has highlighted the problem of valuable non-English publications being occluded to the wider readership, and the urgency of addressing the situation. This chapter presents an overview of a body of Chinese-medium literature on the teaching of English academic writing to non-English major graduate students in mainland Chinese universities. Twenty-six articles were selected based on a systematic search in the China Academic Journals Full-Text Database. Analysis of these papers revealed features along five dimensions: target students and the curriculum location, timing and duration of the instruction, tackling the challenge of teaching multidisciplinary classes, collaboration between English language and content teachers, and the growing popularity of genre-based pedagogy, in particular as shown in the teaching of abstract writing. An ecological perspective that emphasizes the impact of local influences on educational initiatives informed discussions of the findings of the literature-based study. A transnational vision was proposed for the writing education in the sphere of English for Research Publication Purposes.
