ABSTRACT
After more than thirty years of rapid growth, China’s city development is shifting from a quantity-driven model to a quality-based one. Urban regeneration, which prioritizes the making and optimization of public spaces, has become the theme of the so-called new urbanization. The building of distinctive vibrant districts centered on high-quality public space has been proven by many successful developments to be an effective way to boost social integration, create unique identity, and promote urban vitality. This chapter uses the urban design for the North Bund in Shanghai as a case study to analyze the key strategies of building a vibrant urban district.
