ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the mobility of students who leave their homes to study in Higher Education in different, often English-speaking, countries is the focus, with specific attention paid to the intersection of student mobility, language, and globalization. In order to achieve this, the chapter begins with an analysis of the continuing rise of English in Higher Education, the outcomes of which are discussed across the remaining sections in relation to English language and gatekeeping policies for international students; the teaching of English for Academic Purposes; and the importance of English as a Lingua Franca in academia. Each of these sections looks at the link between globalization and Higher Education by exploring how language is used to talk about higher education, to represent it and to construct it through discourse, as well as looking at examples of specific languages when used as a medium of instruction.
