ABSTRACT

Drawing on the perspective of genre and the view of genres as participatory mechanisms for the attainment of scientific knowledge exchange and dissemination, this chapter reviews the current status of multilingual science communication in the digital age in order to set a future agenda for genre research. The chapter will give an overview of today’s complex sociolinguistic landscape in the domain of scientific research communication. It will examine some of the effects of globalization processes—e.g. increasing mobility, interconnectedness, and research networking—and will finally discuss some language-related phenomena that are taking place in the scientific community at a time of increasing techno-dependency.
