ABSTRACT

Community life has been replaced by the virtual spaces of social media, reshaping relationships, access to knowledge, and communication throughout a host of societal institutions. The dramatic changes in labor market demands and the rise of technological innovations have created a priority for increased post-high school education not only in industrialized countries but throughout the globe. This chapter examines some of the economic and social constraints facing low-income and minority students in the United States as they consider their lives after high school. The College Ambition Program (CAP) was created to address these concerns, aiming to aid students through their transition from high school to college. Recognizing society’s need for technologically adaptive youth, CAP has evolved to include a playlist system that digitizes students’ college-preparedness training while also streamlining the matching of students with an internship of their choosing. Vocational education is one of the most common programs designed to prepare students for the world of work.
