ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a new conceptual model: Multilevel Model of Sport Injury (MMSI). It provides a population-specific example of the MMSI that critically examines two pertinent questions: Can coaches impact sport injury? Can coaches be impacted by sport injury? The chapter discusses future avenues of research that shift the focus away solely from the injured athlete to account for the complex, dynamic, and multifaceted nature of sport injury. The MMSI proposes five distinct, yet relational levels of analysis: intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, cultural, and policy. Coaching philosophy is a central plank in understanding a coach’s behaviour. Indeed, it underpins practice and is made up of a collective of values, beliefs, assumptions, attitudes, principles, and priorities. Sport coaches operate within a complex, ever-changing environment that imposes many pressures on them. The psychology of sport injury is an established field of research that offers practitioners working with injured athletes a rich resource to inform their practice.
