ABSTRACT

An overview of issues related to inference testing is presented in Chapter 8. Regardless of the inferential statistical test employed, the nature of the process, the thinking, and the decision-making are similar. The fundamental concept of hypothesis testing is about identifying the relationship between an independent variable (X) and a dependent variable (Y). In this chapter, the notion that this thinking can be extended to multiple Xs and multiple Ys, is explained. The issues described in Chapter 8 include, between- and within-groups, one- and two-tailed tests, Type 1 and Type 2 errors, power, robustness, statistical vs. practical significance, and the importance of sample size.
