ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the philosophical and theoretical background of Individualized Accountability Plans (IAPs), a process of implementing IAPs, possible approaches to assess effectiveness of IAPs, and recommendations to develop further the IAP process. IAPs are action plans co-created by supervisors and supervisees that help staff members take ownership of their positions, including how they approach and are held accountable for their work. The goal of using IAPs is to help student staff members make meaning of their jobs and leadership roles on an individualized level that propel them toward the construct of self-authorship. An important consideration in utilizing IAPs is the societal and cultural expectations of what supervisors should expect from student staff. For professional staff members who implement IAPs, it is critical to continually evaluate the effectiveness of each staff member’s IAP by journaling, narrative evaluation, and conversation.
