ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the more general or theoretical discussion and an operative work. It focuses on the characteristics of a workshop-studio approach to teaching landscape design, particularly in a creative phase of students’ work, and analyses what kind of teacher profile is most suitable in a landscape design studio. Landscape architecture is in fact a highly interdisciplinary profession in which, depending on the definition of the problem, the field of work constantly shifts from a more research analytical approach through to creative solutions for creating new landscapes. A project-oriented approach and introductory design studios are normally linked to a smaller space, but the problems are complex enough to allow the processing of individual thematic groups of the landscape. Teachers of advanced landscape design studios must be flexible and must react to unforeseen situations. With advanced studios, cooperation is usually with specific clients, so the theme and the selection of specific locations is determined in real time.
