ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the representation of refugee and proto refugee queer youth within documentary forms, considering aspects of performativity, citizenship and documentation. Examining the case studies Exodus: Our Journey Through Europe (BBC 2016, UK), Exiled: Europe’s Gay Refugees (Channel 4 2016, UK) and Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia (Channel 4 2014, UK), alongside key texts which focus on Iran, and the advent of the ‘UndocuQueer’ movement in the USA, queer youth are revealed to be inspirational political figures, working towards new models of social justice and civil rights.
