ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the importance of internationalizing academicians and students through their teaching and learning curriculum, research, and service. Careers in the international sport environment abound, be they through corporate sport, professional sport leagues, sport marketing companies, or international sport governing bodies. It is important to distinguish between the terms globalization and internationalization. Internationalization professes to promote recognition and respect between countries, whereas globalization has been suggested to promote de-nationalization and homogenization and is often characterized by unequal power relations. Internationalization is a very relevant topic on university campuses around the world and has become an organizational priority. The internationalization of sport has been accurately described by Fairley, Lizandra, and Gladden as being reflected in many spheres. The chapter outlines methods for internationalizing the curriculum, research, and service components, first from a generic perspective, and then from a sport management perspective.
