ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how music for film is composed: Here, the music also often moves from one emotion to another in a short amount of time. There are several reasons why creating adaptive music can be difficult. It is evident that it is no small task to create effective adaptive music, and that it takes a different workflow from that of linear music. However, some effective adaptive music techniques have been created, some of which have become more or less standard when trying to create adaptive music for games. The chapter also look at an idea for composing adaptive music using the more complex generative composition method. Diegetic music is music that is played 'from within' the game world. An interactive music composer should be very aware of as many of these things as possible, in order to give the computer - and thus the game - as much freedom as possible.
