ABSTRACT

For some years now as part of their Halloween concert tradition, Phish have played a tribute version of one of their favorite albums. A one-shot deal, their cover of Pink Floyd's achievement stays remarkably faithful to the original and represents one of the great cover versions of The Dark Side of the Moon. An achievement all the more remarkable given the fact that, as Mike Gordon, the band's bass player, reports, Phish learned the piece the day of the concert! Mike was kind enough to answer some questions about his and Phish's feelings about Floyd and their version of The Dark Side of the Moon. The main spontaneity came from deciding to cover the album on the spur of the moment. They had covered the Beatles' White Album and the Who's Quadrophenia on two prior Halloweens, so that they have no problem paying tribute to big influences from that country.
