ABSTRACT

This essay concerns problems I have been preoccupied with for some time concerning the presence in dance of the figure. Deleuze is helpful here in grasping that the presence of the Figure is not the same thing as figuration. Forsythe’s interest in drawing in his installation work also brings a phenomenological approach to dance through proprioception and intero-ception into alignment with notation (see Chapter 1). In a broader sense, one can see in this essay how the visual and the performative align with questions of trace, writing, and inscription. Of course, it is the presence of the videography of Peter Welz that renders the possibilities of retranslation possible so that here (as in Chapter 9) intermediality is the beginning of a performed dance theory.
