ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the skills required for living in present-day society and ways in which educators may facilitate the learning hereof. It clarifies the different conceptions of design within educational field. The book then explores how the conception of a networked world has shaped networked learning as an emerging academic field. Combining three theories in ethics – consequentialism, deontology and virtue theory – with key themes in philosophy of technology, it also frames and contributes to several of discussions carried out in connection with networked learning. The book presents a model of teacher practice based on an analytical framework that consists of three dimensions; teachers' skills, knowledge and beliefs. It examines the concept of literacy from three perspectives: as strategies to read and write digital text, as genre-based skills in a formal school context and as participation in a social practice.
