ABSTRACT

Teachers have a key role in society to support students to develop democratic values, autonomous personality and fundamental knowledge, and also to socialise them into society. This chapter presents a model of teacher practice based on an analytical framework that consists of three levels teachers' skills, knowledge and beliefs outlined in three roles: teachers as practitioners, teachers as designers and teachers as critical investigators. Teachers' practices are embedded in and related to a line of educational conditions. These conditions are educational policy, educational science, technology, student culture and educational institutions. These conditions are seen in the outer part of the analytical framework, and they are domains that can both challenge and inform teachers' perceptions, judgments, decision-making, and then drive their action. The domain of educational science points out the theory and new methods for handling tasks in practice, and new perspectives on understanding subjects and the teaching profession.
