ABSTRACT
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism estimate based on Ambitious about Autism figures, that as many as 26,000 young autistic people are being unlawfully excluded each year. More changes to school exclusion guidance include the introduction of the role of a special educational needs Expert. Formal exclusion in England is where pupils are excluded from school for either a short period or permanently due to their behaviour. As for heads ‘picking up the pieces’ when home education fails, look at the other side too, where parents are trying to deal with a child who has been severely traumatized by the school experience. Research on the educational experiences of autistic girls is limited. A key issue highlighted by K. Sproston et al. is the lack of support for autistic girls transitioning to Pupil referral units (PRU). For the autistic girls they interviewed, there were in some cases long delays between being excluded from school and accessing the PRU.
