ABSTRACT

Oral history recounts the people evolving with their landscape in north central New Mexico, USA over millennia. They have been cultured by their forefathers that this land is sacred and they are entrusted with its eternal care. The haphazard discovery of this continent by other people led to values conflict, cultural trauma, and forceful removal from their homelands. The confiscation of Taos Pueblo’s sacred Blue Lake and surrounding watershed in 1906 by the U.S. Government began a 64-year fight. Their perseverance culminated in the return of their lands in 1970, securing both their sovereignty and lands for future generations.
