ABSTRACT

The changing political scenario in Myanmar offers new vistas for India to expand its relations with Myanmar. The return of a democratically elected government allows India and Myanmar to rebuild their relationship as kindred democracies and to develop their current relationship which to a large extent had been dependent on security sector concerns. However, India’s strategic establishment does not appear to have taken adequate cognizance of China’s intentions with Myanmar which could provide China a strategic foothold in the Bay of Bengal with security implications for India. India needs to ensure its interests in Myanmar through higher levels of commercial investments in the Myanmar economy and the new opportunities offered by the democratic transition.
