ABSTRACT

Data as Culture is the Open Data Institute’s art programme. Since 2012 it has evolved in many ways, shifting focus and processes to enable artists to create and exhibit work which engages on some level – conceptually, practically or critically – with data and society. The programme has become part of the organisational DNA and continues to react and reflect on the changing data landscape as does the organisation itself. This chapter describes the journey to date, highlighting key exhibitions, partnerships and processes that have enabled over 40 artists and tens of thousands of audience members to be directly involved.
