ABSTRACT

The Coaching Academy at the University of Birmingham is an initiative that demonstrates how a successful coaching approach can be used to leverage the power of conversation to enable an institution and its people to deliver on organizational and individual priorities. Universities have been early adopters of the idea of developing internal coaches. Established in 2014, the Coaching Academy comprises of 35 externally accredited executive coaches who have been trained to provide coaching within the University of Birmingham. All university staff members have the opportunity to access coaching support through the Coaching Academy. The success of the Coaching Academy has positioned coaching as a development intervention to support existing formal programs. The vision for the Coaching Academy is “to be a highly valued and respected provider of one-to-one executive level coaching for University colleagues at senior levels and be highly respected across higher education as ‘best in class.’”.
