ABSTRACT
Friedrich List’s ideas on integration and trade deal with the different aspects of globalization and the ongoing technological progress. He offers a comprehensive insight into the benefits, but also challenges of these developments. This chapter analyses the importance of List’s views on growth and integration from the perspective of modern approaches to economic growth and international economics. Furthermore, it presents some ideas on how List’s ideas could help to explain and understand current economic developments, such as the crisis of the European Union or the new form of isolationism of the United States of America. The discussion focuses on his most comprehensive contribution, the National System of Political Economy. The chapter focuses on the concept of productive forces and its link to modern growth theories. It deals with List’s ideas on integration and lessons for the European Union. The chapter provides information on the question of whether so-called Trumponomics is linked with List’s approaches.
