ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of culture in personality development, the socializing function of culture, and the role of culture in individual and social behaviour. The government's regulatory and developmental role should reflect the thinking of its people. Harmony should exist between policy formulation by the government and policy implementation by the people. Management development is a systematic process used for the training and growth of managers and supervisors so as to improve their management of organizations. The standardized package for management development has not achieved the goal of organizational effectiveness. Managers exposed to a development programme based on such an ethos and such a system should realize the inappropriateness and ineffectiveness for people brought up in a different sociocultural environment. Managers and supervisors fresh from a training programme seek to socialize the behaviour of others with the attributes of an alien culture.
