ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyse the main concepts and directions of European education policy. More specifically, I will try to show how the historic development of the European Union as an alliance of its member-states’ dominant capitalist social classes has shaped a neoliberal European education policy. This policy imposes particular educational goals and standards on the educational system of each member-state to empower the European Union in international economic and political competition. Moreover, educational policy is used by Europe’s dominant social classes as a weapon against any radical and critical approach to education. Marxist Critical educators in Europe need to be aware of the main concepts and directions of European education policy if they are serious about building an international community fostering economic, social and political change towards socialism.
