ABSTRACT

The humble offering makes a comparison between Shen and Nakagami Kenji, and on that basis adds to the authors understanding of Shen; this is an attempt of a comparatively strong experimental nature. If Shen research is to be merely confined within a framework of Chinese modern literature, then it is likely that one will get one’s hands and feet entangled in the floating seaweed that is the sphere of Chinese culture and lose a broader vision. Shen was from the western region of Hunan province. Shen was a member of the Han ethnic group who also had the blood of the Tujia and Miao peoples in his veins, and until adulthood he lived in an area where these several ethnic groups mixed. Since ancient times, West Hunan has been referred to contemptuously by the Han Chinese as an area inhabited by barbarians.
