ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author reviews the kinds of opportunities that have emerged for integrated dance, specifically within the context of Encompass, an education and outreach arm of Touch Compass Dance Company based in Auckland, New Zealand. She discusses practices and influences that have opened up creative opportunities and synergies in the work that she have been involved with as a part of Touch Compass. The author analyses challenges, strategies, and successes through a dynamic questioning lens, showing commitment to negotiation while also theorising the journey of integrated dance specifically within the Encompass context. There are tensions and complexities in embracing difference within the frameworks of integrated dance, both in practice and echoed in the literature of integrated/inclusive dance practice. The dance-teaching experience becomes a nurturing one, by fostering different possibilities of making sense of and accepting other ways of knowing.
