ABSTRACT

This case study describes a five-year search for and construction of a new facility for a hospice in Voorburg, the Netherlands. The project involved the planning, design, and construction for the transformation of part of an existing polyclinic hospital into a hospice. The Open Building approach was successfully used as the strategy for design decision-making, financing, and construction. The Open Building principles were indispensable, enabling the client to rent a building for 30 years with a low rent, and to invest in its renovation with an expected use period of 30–40 years. The client acted as owner for the newly built interior fit-out of the base building. The chapter also discusses the cost modelling tool used to support decision-making as well a specific technical solution enabling flexible wire management.
