ABSTRACT

In Australia the applied practice of psychology is regulated by the Psychology Board of Australia. Ultimately, the goal of the general registration standard and the case report requirements of the internship programs are to protect the public by ensuring that psychologists can demonstrate an appropriate level of applied assessment and intervention related competence. Approved educational qualifications, case studies/reports, supervised experience, and examinations play a role in the assessment of competence. The Board also assesses competence for general registration through direct supervisor observation, the National Psychology Exam, and assessment by approved supervisors regarding the eight core capabilities of psychologists. Competence in terms of assessment and intervention application related to the core competencies while being sensitive to cultural and individual differences is what one is aiming to demonstrate in their assessment and intervention case reports. These case reports are designed to help provisional psychologists showcase their basic applied psychological competence in assessment and intervention and therefore involves both assessment and intervention write-ups.
