ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the process of vocational assessment with a client with significant clinical issues. The client, Wendy, is a composite creation from a number of clients, created for the purposes of illustration of typical dynamics. The vocational assessment was requested by the client to assist her decision about seeking a new job. The assessment measures used were: Neo Personality Inventory – revised; Work Aspect Preference Scale; Self Directed Search; Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. Vocational interests were assessed using the Self-Directed Search. Vocational counselling has used a variety of constructs to assist with vocational choice, including interests, values, abilities, and personality. The strongest feature of the personality profile is that Wendy is prone to experience a high level of negative emotion and frequent episodes of psychological distress. Good relationships in the workplace are important, reflecting the support desired in the personality profile.
