ABSTRACT

Some characters in comics are so iconic they need no introduction. Such is the case with Batman. In this chapter, the Dark Knight faces what is perhaps his most devious foe. No, it isn’t Joker, Penguin, or Riddler, rather it is an economic malaise common to us all. Batman faces the economic condition known as scarcity. While Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne may appear to have unlimited wealth to fund his crime fighting efforts, his deep pockets are not bottomless. And even if they were, it doesn’t mean that the Caped Crusader doesn’t have to deal with scarcity. This is obvious in the constant choices he must make, and his proclivity to hire a sidekick. Batman may never reflect on opportunity costs, but as this chapter demonstrates, even he must deal with the high costs of being a superhero.
