ABSTRACT

A survey of two ongoing disputes about the modal import of grounding: Is a fact necessitated by its grounds (the necessitarianism vs. contingentism dispute)? And is grounding an internal relation (the internalism vs. externalism dispute)? Skiles discusses a number of ways in which these disputes interact with debates over the nature of grounding itself, as well as how they interact with debates in other areas of philosophy in which claims about what grounds what play a central role.
